What is a gold sovereign you ask? Lets consult the “old” Wikipedia, shall we…
“The sovereign is a gold coin of the United Kingdom, with a nominal value of one pound sterling but in practice used as a bullion coin.”
Sovereigns are minted from 22 Karat gold which means they are not pure gold but a mix of gold and copper. That means sales tax does apply in Canada and partly explains why they are not that popular among bullion investors in this country.
When you sell gold sovereigns to us at our Edmonton area store, we will check their weights and dimensions to make sure they are authentic coins. A full sovereign should be 22.05 mm in diameter, 1.52 mm in thickness and weigh about 7.988052 Grams , notice how I said about? 🙂
A half sovereign should be 19.30 mm in Diameter, 0.99 mm thick and weigh around 3.99 Grams. A half sovereign will also be 22 Karat gold.
Most gold sovereigns are bought for their gold content and will be melted down. Most years of sovereigns are quite common
however in rare cases we may pay a premium above gold value for rare “numismatic” (collector coins). Gold sovereigns were minted from 1817 to present day although an old sovereign does not necessary mean it’s rare, some years had very high mintage. Most sovereigns will see the melting pot.
We will buy gold sovereigns of any year and in any condition. Visit our Edmonton Area Retail Store at 947 Ordze Road Sherwood Park, Alberta or call us at 780-628-6895. You can also mail your coins to us for a free appraisal.
